Following the crisis rocking the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP). The BAUCHI State governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar Esq, on Tuesday evening, approved the immediate suspension of the Rector of the institution, Dr Bala Adamu Azare.
This was promulgate by the state Head of Civil Service, Mr Abdon Dala Gin, while addressing journalists at the Government House shortly after the state deputy governor, Nuhu Gidado, met with members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) of the institution.
According to the Head of Civil Service, the suspension did not mean that Dr Azare had been disengaged but was only suspended to pave way for further investigation into the allegations levelled against him by the academic union of the polytechnic.
Dala Gin informed that the state government had received a letter from the academic staff union of the institution, through the Ministry of Higher Education, raising some issues bordering on staff and students’ welfare,, saying that government engaged both management of the institution and ASUP and agreed to set up a verification committee to investigate issues raised by the union.
“We have engaged the management of the institution as well as the leadership of the union in a dialogue and we have mapped out strategies on how to resolve the lingering issues as contained in the 10-point demand of the union. We agreed that there was going to be a verification committee that should take off immediately to verify some of the issues that were contained in the 19-point demand,” he stated.
He, however, lamented the students demonstration earlier in the day, which led to the protesting students blocking the Bauchi-Jos highway, saying that the state deputy governor visited the polytechnic with a view to nipping in the bud the students’ protest before it escalated.
According to him, the deputy governor succeeded in discussing with the academic union and the students, assuring them that the state government would wade into the lingering crisis in the institution, with a view to finding lasting solution to the problems bedeviling the polytechnic.
“The union, impressed by the personal intervention of the deputy governor as a sign of goodwill on their own part decided to suspend the indefinite strike action they could have embarked upon today (Tuesday) following the expiration of their three-day warning strike, which ended yesterday (Monday),” he informed.
He added that members of the union had agreed on the path of dialogue as well as to allow members of the verification committee set up by government to carry out their assignment to allow for amicable resolution of the crisis.
Dala Gin stated that government wade into the crisis rocking the polytechnic, named after the first civilian governor of the state, Alhaji Abubakar Tatari Ali, based on due process, saying that this was done in the absence of a governing council for the institution.
