Aim and Objectives
The programme in Geography is structured to help students develop a holistic view about their physical human and environment interrelationships. Most importantly the course aims at developing the students’ ability to think logically on issues involving man environmental relations.
Among the specific objectives are (a), to acquire sufficient knowledge about the physical and chemical components of their surrounding environment and (b), to have adequate knowledge about their human environment through such topical issues in social, economic and cultural geography.
GEO 001: A. Physical Geography

(iv) Major Landform Features: mountains, plateaux, plains; their types, modes of formation and uses.
(v) Oceans: ocean basins, salinity, ocean currents (causes, types and effects).
(vi) Weather and Climate: definitions, elements, factors, basic weather instruments, weather records, importance of weather and climate, effects of climatic elements, climatic classification based on Greek and Koppens methods, major climatic types.
(vii) Soils: definition, types and properties; factors and processes of soil formation; soil profile; importance of soils: effects of human activities on soil.
(viii) Vegetation: Types and characteristics; distributive factors Influencing their distribution,
(ix) Environmental Resources: human; atmospheric; water vegetation and mineral resources.
(x) External Processes: Weathering and mass movement; definition, types and features.
(xi) Internal processes of Landform Development: earthquake vulcanicity other tectonic processes eg compressional, tensional and faulting action of underground water.
(xii)Environmental Interaction: land ecosystem, environmental balance and interference with the natural environment.
(xiii) Environmental Hazards: Soil erosion, flooding, drought encroachment, deforestation and pollution; causes, effect and preventive methods.

(iii) Conventional symbols, relief representation and drawing of relief profiles

(i) World Population: patterns and factors of population distribution and movement; population growth: factors and problems.
(ii) Settlement: types; patterns; functions; and factors of settlement location.
(iii) Primary Activities: agriculture; lumbering; quarrying; fishing
(iv) Industry: types; major commodities; factors of industrial location; importance of industries; problems of industrial growth in the developing countries; World Trade Routes, with special emphasis on Trade between Nigeria and the outside world.
(v) Transportation: types (merits and demerits of each mode): transportation and economic development, problems of transportation.
- Regional Geography of Nigeria
(i) Location position and size of Nigeria
(ii) Political divisions
(iii) Physical setting: relief drainage, soils and climate.
(v) Minerals and power resources
(vii) Industry and commerce
(ix) Geographical Regions of Nigeria:
Eastern Highlands, Sokoto Plains, Chad Basin, Niger-Benue Trough, Cross River Basin and Southern Coastlands, each of these geographical regions should be treated under Coastlands, each of these geographical regions should be treated under the following sub-headings.
