The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, has warned that the scheme will not tolerate any form of assault or cold-blooded killing of his corps members.
General Johnson Olawumi, gave this warning following the death of Miss Idowu Shukurat Yetunde, a corps member, who until her death, served in Ilorin, Kwara State.
To this effect, the DG sent a high-powered delegation, headed by the Director, Corps Welfare and Inspectorate, Mr Michael Ahile; Head of NYSC Legal unit, Mr Ibrahim Tijani Ahmed and Assistant Director, Protocol & Publicity, Mr Eddy Megwa; to among other things, register pains and displeasure over the death of the corps member,
In a statement made available to our correspondent on Tuesday, in Abuja, he said the visit was to implore security agents and traditional rulers in the state, to unravel the circumstance that led to the death of the corps member and subsequently bring the culprits to justice.
“The National Youth Service Corps will not continue to tolerate the abuse, harassment, intimidation and cold-blooded killing of corps members that are deployed to serve their fatherland during the service year.
“The management wishes to stress that it is the corporate responsibility of all Nigerians to ensure that corps members deployed to all parts of the country for the one-year mandatory service are accorded all assistance regarding their security and well-being in any part of the country where they are posted to serve. Every effort should be made to protect them.
“Having visited the State Security Service command, the Commissioner of Police and the Emir of Ilorin, the management of NYSC is highly confident that all hands will be on deck to ensure that the culprits of this heinous crime are brought to book.
“We use this opportunity to deeply express our heartfelt sympathy to the immediate family and relatives of the deceased corps member. We equally console all the corps members serving in Kwara State and indeed the entire nation for the great loss of one of their colleagues. It is our fervent prayer that this unpleasant development will not reoccur.”
Based on reports, the deceased was last seen on Saturday, May 23, 2015 when she informed her colleagues that she was going to Shoprite located at Fate road, in Ilorin, for shopping.
