Why Students Enroll in an Unaccredited Schools

The benefits derived from this profession entice many over-ambitious individuals to enroll in some unaccredited schools just for the purpose of  studying medicine and surgery. Many of these students may end up spending up to 15 years or more while others drop out of school with uncertain future.

Many Universities in Nigeria claim to offer medicine and surgery without being fully partially accredited. The worst part of it is that, these school are listed in JAMB-UTME Bruchure thus making innocent ambitious students to fall preys to them.  As a point of note, among all the private Universities in Nigeria, only 2 Universities have acquired full accreditation to even enroll medical students.

Regulation of Medical Training in Nigeria

The training of medical doctors is a highly regulated process under the auspices of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). Their duty is to ensure that each participatory university is the training process do not only have the physical infrastructures but professional manpower to ensure adequate training. They do periodical inspections of manpower and equipment in different colleges of health sciences and teaching hospitals to ensure proficiency in the medical training process.

Even the fully accredited Universities for Medicine are fully monitored as per the required enrollment quota. If you are planning to study medicine and surgery in Nigeria – I want you to know that the total number of students that can be enrolled by both fully  and partially  accredited Medical Colleges in Nigeria is about 2750. Many prospective students and parents are still unaware of this fact and that’s why over 6,000 candidates will apply for one university each year to study medicine or dentistry.

Notes for Students and Parents

The table above clearly explains that it is not all University that claims to offer medicine and surgery actually obtain the accreditation to do so. Again, it is worthy of not that only 2925 or less can get admission to study medicine or dentistry each year in Nigeria. This stats create an unnecessary competition considering the limited admission slots and the huge crown that applies to study this course each year through JAMB – UTME.

Our Advice to both parents and students is that before choosing any university for studying of medicine and surgery or any other courses, ensure that the institution is fully or partially accredited to offer that course.
