Recommended Technology

The courses in industrial design may require different materials and technologies, and those requirements will be specified by the instructor. By the middle of the sophomore year, students are encouraged to purchase their own laptop and design software. The department has specialized computing labs for student designers. However seats are limited, and courses are routinely taught in these spaces. As the students progress into the higher level courses, the near necessity of having a personal laptop with design software becomes more important.

The industrial design process has experienced huge leaps in evolution over the last few years with the rise and adoption of 3D printing. New consumer-friendly 3D printers can produce dimensional objects and print upwards with a plastic like substance opposed to traditional printers that spread ink across a page. Industrial design courses teach theoretical and practical skills by combining creativity with technology they provide a broad knowledge of production methods and materials.

Typical Employers

Employment can be found in both the private and public sector. Private sector work could include a range of manufactured products for the domestic and industrial market. Public sector work could include designing interactive facilities, such as public information points and equipment used by services such as the police, fire and ambulance. Also, the industrial and domestic product manufacturers, car manufacturers, point-of-sale designers, Self-employment, or employment within a design-based consultancy, is also possible.
